George Crumb Trio

Norbert Girlinger

born 1962 in Upper Austria, proves his versatility as flutist with classical chamber music, as soloist with various orchestras, solo-recitals, in projects with contemporary music and those with improvised music between the cultures.

He can be heard in ensembles like the George Crumb trio, the Spring String Quartet, the Chameleon Orchestra and in free projects staging Henze’s El Cimarròn and Watermusic.

He has masterminded various international projects, e.g. Kompozicijos-Kompositionen in cooperation with the European Capitals of Culture 2009, Linz and Vilnius.

In search of a new sound quality he has experimented with a lot of different materials and, as a result, began to use a cylindrical wooden flute, which is rarely used nowadays. He is presumably the only flutist worldwide whose instruments – from bass flute to piccolo – are exclusively handcrafted in wood.

His work was most significantly influenced by his teacher Wolfgang Schulz (University of Vienna), his long standing musical partners, and last, but not least, by his students.
After completing diverse courses of studies his has been teaching flute at the Anton Bruckner University Linz since 1989.

TV and radio recordings, CDs, invitations to masterclasses and concert tours through Europe, Asia and America serve to document his musical career.
